Description

The Property of a Gentleman

Circle of Jan Davidsz. de Heem

Still life with pomegranates in a pewter dish, with lemons, oranges and grapes all on a draped stone ledge

oil on canvas

unframed: 58.9 x 76.4 cm.; 23⅛ x 30⅛ in.

framed: 77.4 x 95.9 cm.; 30½ x 37¾ in.

Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 8 February 1926, lot 42 (as follower of Jan Davidsz. de Heem), for £33–12s., where acquired by an ancestor of the present owner;
Thence by descent.

A very similar large, pewter dish appears in a painting of circa 1646 by Jan Davidsz. de Heem, in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.1We are grateful to Dr Fred G. Meijer for his assistance in the cataloguing of this lot, for comparing some of the handling of the still life here to that found in the work of Alexander Coosemans, circa 1650, and for drawing attention to a painting bearing the signature of the now-debunked artist, David Davidsz. de Heem, sold at Beurret Bailly Widmer Auktionen AG, Basel, 6 April 2022, lot 67, which appears to be by the same hand.
